SISU SAMBAD: SILIGURI: NOVEMBER 17, 2017: Street children may soon get birth certificates and Aadhaar cards as the Union Ministry for Women and Child Development is planning to start an initiative on this, said Union Minister Maneka Gandhi.  There are an estimated 37,059 children who live on the brutal streets of Mumbai, Of these 905 children (2.5 per cent) were found living on railway premises such as platforms and trains. 70% of the children were boys, while 30% were girls. Around 24 % of children of the school going age were illiterate. Around 15 % children were addicted to substances like drugs, tobacco, whitener, shoe polish. One in four children admitted not taking regular meals due to lack of money, illness, injury or dependence on others. 78% children weren't aware of scope for any assistance from the police, government agencies or NGOs.  But no data available for Siliguri.  Shahjahan and Sunil are not the only children who live in the Stret of Siliguri. There are millions of Indian children who are forced to live in hazardous conditions on India’s streets by the compulsion of poverty and hunger. This, despite the fact that India, along with 192 UN member states had committed to achieve sustainable development by 2030, that entitles every child to a decent living standard. If street children don’t even get their basic rights related to nutrition, education and sanitation, India will definitely fall behind in the global race for sustainable development.
